The Alcoholic Beverage Control Board develops and enforces reasonable administrative regulations relative to the sale and use of alcoholic beverages, tobacco, nicotine and vapor products. The Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control includes various divisions as follows: the Commissioner’s office, the Distilled Spirits and Malt Beverage divisions, an administrative services branch, a licensing division, an education branch, a legal division and an enforcement division.


We are looking for an Investigator II to join our team of highly skilled professional. As an Investigator II you will conduct complex and sensitive investigations and enforcement of Kentucky and federal alcohol and tobacco laws.


Investigators are highly skilled members of a team of law enforcement professionals who work to provide a vital link between the alcohol industry and the citizens of the Commonwealth. From the initial inspection of a prospective new premises to the use of investigative techniques in mitigating access of alcohol and tobacco to minors, our investigators work to safeguard communities across the Commonwealth.


The Kentucky Alcoholic Beverage Control is a participating Kentucky Law Enforcement Foundation Program Fund (KLEFPF) agency. Investigators are required to possess and maintain a Peace Officer Professional Standards (POPS) certificate. Investigators currently receive an additional $4,562.00 training stipend each year for adhering to the training guidelines established by the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council (KLEC).


Key Responsibilities:

• Conducts complex and sensitive investigations such as death and/or fatal collision investigations. Assists in training and mentoring newly hired investigators. Completes and submits administrative paperwork and other required documentation for administrative and criminal assignments.
• Plans, organizes, coordinates, reviews the work of a group of investigators including, but not limited to, search warrant planning and execution, investigation of cases and/or executing emergency suspension orders. Investigates complaints.
• Conducts required number of tobacco inspections. Issues administrative citations and/or warnings for tobacco violations under KRS Chapter 438. Achieves and maintains Federal Drug Administration (FDA) Commission status. Follows guidelines of FDA Program Coordinator and testifies at FDA hearings.
• Searches, seizes, catalogs, marks and secures evidence and contraband while maintaining chain of custody. Complies with all standards contained within the agency's Procedure Manual. Recruits Investigative Aides and supervises them during enforcement operations.
• Testifies at administrative and criminal proceedings.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• Possess and maintain a Peace Officer Professional Standards (POPS) law enforcement officer certification through the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council (KLEC)
• Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
• Required to carry and/or use a firearm
• Be exposed to dangerous working conditions
• Frequently communicate in person or by other means of technology
• Be exposed to contagious diseases
• Work overtime or alternate schedules
• Strong verbal and written communications
• Computer literacy
• Solid judgement
• Able to lift heavy objects

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have four years experience in the field of investigative law enforcement or a related field of investigation.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: NONE

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience as a sworn law enforcement officer will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be 21 years of age. Must possess a valid driver's license prior to employment in this job classification. Employees in this classification are subject to the provisions of KRS Chapter 15 and 503 KAR 1:140 relating to peace officer certification as administered by the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council. Working Conditions

May work irregular hours due to nature of investigative work. Will be required to travel in the course of investigations. May be exposed to dangerous situations and makes physical arrests. Works in all types of weather.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
